The "manual buzzer" replaced the original buzzer, the sound made when calls are run, in late 2006.

Jim Rome was given the idea by a friend that, when a telemarketer calls him on the phone, he should scream real loudly into the mouthpiece, like a "manual buzzer", and hang up. It eventually stuck as the new buzzer sound for The Jim Rome Show.

The manual buzzer was incorporated with Tommy in Detroit's walrus sound to create the parody, Jacko's Adult Alarm.

Meggan in Sacramento became known for using the manual buzzer in her takes, becoming "Meggan the Manual Buzzer".

In January 2010, a clip from LaDanian Tomlinson's "Electric Glide", where he says, "I don't like that call, not a very good call!" was included with the Manual Buzzer
